Galileo Magnetic Field Measurements Provide More Evidence
that Europa Has a Hidden Ocean

August 24, 2000  Using data acquired with the Galileo spacecraft, scientists have discovered that Europa's magnetic field is consistent with the presence of a hidden ocean that would lie about 7.5 kilometers below its ice-covered surface.  This supports an earlier hypothesis which invoked a hidden ocean to explain the structure and changes of Europa's surface ice. Europa is one of Jupiter's four larger moons. Click here to access the BBC article about this discovery.
