Sedimentary Layers Seen on Mars

December 4, 2000   High-resolution photographs from the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft show what appear to be hundreds of sedimentary layers that are located in planetary basins. This further supports the assertion that those basins once contained lakes of water, and the possibility exists that the sediment might also contain fossils. Article

[Editors note: there’s also evidence for the existence of past oceans on Mars, mostly from extremely precise topographical measurements that were made using a lasing system on the Surveyor, but analysis of Surveyor photographs also supports that assertion. In addition to this, a presumptive Mars meteorite found in the Antarctic indicates that Mars once had salty oceans.]
