Newly Discovered Galaxies Appear to be
Ten Billion Years Old

August 18, 2000   Astronomers in Great Britain have reported observing galaxies with a redshift of (6).  This indicates that these galaxies are about ten billion years old.  Previous to this, astronomers thought that the oldest galaxies in the universe had a redshift no greater than two (2). These observations thus both establish the oldest observed galaxies and challenge the view that galaxies in this universe have been created only recently.  Click here for the BBC article that describes this discovery.
