NASA and ESA Will Have Landers on Mars at About the Same Time; Competition Already Evident

September 18, 2000   NASA will land two rovers on Mars in 2003, and in the same time period the European Space Agency will land a stationary instrument called "Beagle 2."  There is thus debate as to which approach is the best -- with one European scientist saying that their Beagle 2 will do real science -- whereas the NASA rovers will just be exploring terrain while making crude measurements.  Article.
